A 2012 MacBook Pro can only be upgraded to Catalina. Apple will probably release security updates for a while. I sympathise with the fact that modern Mac portables are not user upgradable, unfortunately the ones that can be upgraded are now vintage. Don't get me wrong I love older Macs.
